XnView: A Powerful Yet Easily Usable Image Editing Software For Windows
Most of us don’t need Adobe Photoshop for simple image editing needs. Sometimes quick image editing is needed for photos to make it look great and ready for printing. All you need to do is quick touch-ups like Resizing, Cropping, Special Effects, Image Conversion, etc. There are myriad of free applications that lets you do that.
In this article, we review one such good free image viewing and editing software called “XnView”.
XnView is a light weight free image viewing and processing application for Windows. Don’t get it underestimated due to it’s name. It’s not just a viewer. It has bunch of useful features too. It supports more than 400 graphics formats.
Programs interface is simple to use. You can browse through folder in programs “Browser” tab.
All standard image editing features like cropping, image rotations, red eye removal, brightness, contrast adjustments etc can be accessed right away by single-click on corresponding icons..

In the adjustment window, you can easily edit the Brightness, Contrast, and Gamma correction by just dragging the slider. Turn on check box “Apply to image” to see the modifications in image in real-time.

Lots of many other features include Resize image, Canvas Size adjustment, Add text etc which can be accessed from “Image” menu. We changed Canvas size of our test image. You can choose background color of Canvas and also set position of image. In our example, we will image to left to make space for text caption in the right side.

Using it’s “Add text to image” feature, you can add text with various controls like Opacity, font size, font type, text background color etc.

By clicking on Filter—> Effects… You can give various special effects to your image including Drop Shadow, 3D Border, Emboss, Oil Painting, Lens, Waves etc.

Apart from these features, XnView is packed with many useful tools. You can import from scanner and camera. It’s lets you batch convert images to many other file formats. It has compatibility with Photoshop plug-ins.
It offers customizable screen layout, screen capture, slide show and many more. You can also create web pages from your images. It offers Image IPTC, EXIF metadata support, EXIF auto rotation support, Lossless rotate & crop (jpeg) support and many more.
All-in-all, XnView is a powerful no-nonsense imaging tool. It’s a freeware for personal use only.
It works with Windows 7, Vista, XP, 2000, ME, 98, and 95.
