Safari 4.0 is the latest version of Internet browser from Apple which works on Mac and Windows (XP or Vista). It uses WebKit (open source rendering engine introduced by Apple) to display graphics, render fonts and determine page layouts.

What’s new in Safari 4.0?

1. Top Sites

Upon opening the browser, you can preview your favorite websites in a thumbnail view. Safari 4 tracks the sites you browse and ranks your favorites, presenting up to 24 thumbnails on a single page. You can even customize the display by pinning a favorite site to a specific location in the grid. A star in the upper-right corner indicates that the website has changed since your last view. A single click opens the page and updates it’s thumbnail.

2. Cover Flow and Full History Search

With these features Safari offers a highly visual way of reviewing your site history and bookmarked sites, presenting full-page previews of the websites that look exactly as they did when you last visited them. You can flip through website previews in Cover Flow the same way you flip through album art in iTunes. It automatically stores all the text and a thumbnail of every page in your history and lets you search with the History Search field. Directional arrows let you browse forward and back. Or you can quickly flip through multiple sites using the slider.

3. Windows Native Look and Feel

For PCs running on Windows XP and Vista Safari features a native look — just like other Windows applications — including a native title bar, borders, and toolbars. It uses Windows standard fonts. However you can choose to use Apple’s anti-aliased fonts if you prefer.

4. Full-Page Zoom

Safari scales images and graphics as you zoom in and keeps text as it is while preserving the page layout perfectly.

5. Smart Address Field

The Smart Address Field instantly offers suggestions upon typing. You’ll see the Top Hit and the best matches from your browsing history and bookmark collections.

6. Smart Search Field

Safari offers search suggestions from Google Suggest and your recent search history along with the text search on current viewing page.

7. Phishing and Malware Protection

Safari automatically alerts and does not open pages with suspicious content. EV Certificate support lets you easily spot legitimate sites.

8. Acid 3 Compliance

Safari has full Acid 3 compatibility. Acid 3 tests a browser’s ability to fully render pages using the web standards used to build dynamic, next-generation websites, including CSS, JavaScript, XML, and SVG.
