How To Record/Capture Streaming Audio Using Freecorder Streaming Recorder

Wished you could record or save a streaming song from an Internet radio channel or any other streaming music site? There are some free streaming audio recorder software that capture all sound coming from your Computer’s sound card and then allow you to save it to your hard disk. One such audio stream recorder is Freecorder, a browser toolbar that integrates with Firefox or Internet Explorer.

Note that in order to capture streaming audio seamlessly without any breaks, you need a high speed Internet connection. Also make sure that you stop other downloads or Internet activity while you record.

Installation:

During setup, Freecorder (download link at end of post) allows you to choose for which of the two browsers you want the toolbar to be installed. You can choose both Firefox and IE, or only one of them.

Freecorder tries to change your default search provider to search.conduit.com. Internet Explorer does pop up a dialog asking you if you want to stick with the old search provider. Select your default search provider, and also check the option ‘Prevent programs from suggesting changes to my default search provider’.

Freecorder Interface

Freecorder is installed as browser toolbar. So in order to start using Freecorder, open your Internet Explorer or Firefox browser, either of which you chose to install Freecorder. The Freecorder toolbar consists of a search box, and buttons for recording audio, conversion, play back, settings, recording skype calls, etc. Click on the ‘>>’ (double arrow) to open up more toolbar buttons, including TV Channels, radio stations, and more recording buttons.

Freecorder Settings

Click on ‘Settings’ in the Freecorder toolbar to open the audio and video capture preferences dialog. Under Audio Capture settings, you can set the MP3 audio bitrate, ranging from 32 kbit/s to 320 kbit/s. By default it is 128 kbps. You can also change the storage directory, the folder where all your recorded and converted audio are saved.

Capture Audio Using Freecorder

Since Freecorder is a browser toolbar, this makes it easy for you to start recording streaming music easily from within your browser. Freecorder has a built in search box for searching the Internet for your favorite songs, and also access to many Internet radio stations & channels.

1. Go to the streaming audio site, and start playing the song that you want to record.

2. Click on ‘Record Audio’ in Freecorder toolbar. This will open up Freecorder’s audio recording window showing the size of the recorded audio so far, and the audio signal.

3. Whenever you want to stop recording, move your mouse towards bottom right of Freecorder. The ‘Stop Recording’ button becomes visible. Click on it.

4. Freecorder opens up the ‘Save Recorded Audio’ dialog. By default all recorded songs are saved with date and timestamp as their names. Right click and select ‘Rename’ to rename the MP3 files. If you want to preview the captured audio, select ‘Play in default player’. Select ‘Mark for deletion’ if you don’t want Freecorder to save the file.

Once you are done, click ‘Close’. Freecorder saves the files to the storage directory, that can be changed via the settings menu.

Play Recorded Audio In Freecorder

Want to play the recorded songs. Click on ‘Play’ in the Freecorder toolbar, and it opens up the storage directory where are recorded audio are stored.

Convert Audio Using Freecorder

Since Freecorder captures all audio as MP3, you may want to convert it to other formats such as WMV. Normally you would need an audio converter for doing this. But thanks to Freecorder’s built in audio video converter tool, conversion is as simple as clicking on ‘Convert’ toolbar button, selecting the files to be converted, the output format, and then hitting the ‘Begin’ button.convert-recorded-songs

All converted audio are placed in the folder ‘Converted’ in the storage directory. You can access these files by clicking on ‘Play’ and then navigating to the ‘Converted’ directory.

Customizing Freecorder Toolbar

You personalize Freecorder toolbar to your needs by clicking on the arrow button next to Freecorder icon, and selecting ‘Toolbar options’.
