Don’t want your kid to waste his time playing those silly Microsoft Games? Removing Games link from Start Menu will only hide them, but a smart kid has his way. While there are some good Parental Control software and also other freeware that can prevent access to drives, or password protect folders, these will not work for all applications.

Game Protector is a freeware (non-commercial use) that lets you password protect any games or applications on your Computer. You can block access to internet browsers, chat clients, email clients such as Outlook, games, media players and so on by setting passwords individually to each of them.

Password Protect Software, Games

Download and install the application (download link at bottom).

The program has a simple interface. Click on Open to browse and select the EXE file of the program you want to lock.

For instance if you want to password protect any Microsoft Games, then navigate to the game’s folder as in C:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesMinesweeper and choose the game exe file.

Enter your password twice, change the program’s icon and rename it if you wish to hide it completely. Game Protector creates a backup of the program, so that in case any thing goes wrong you can have your game back.

Click ‘Protect’.

That’s it. Try to access the game or application from the Start Menu, and the link will no longer work if you have changed it’s name. Double click on the protected EXE file and you will be asked to input the password.

Note: Do not rename the EXE file unless very necessary, as it may cause problems while unlocking.

Remove Password And Unlock Games, Apps

For unlocking a previously protected game or program is similar to the above described steps. Only you have to click the ‘Unprotect’ button after selecting the EXE file location (in case you changed it’s name earlier, select this new file) and entering the password twice.

Note for Windows 7 users: Game Protector is not fully compatible with Windows 7. If you come across errors such as resource not found, then run the program in compatibility mode for XP or Vista.
