How To Extract And Separate Tracks From MKV File
MKV or Matroska is a container file format, similar to AVI, MP4, that lets you store any number of separate video, audio, and subtitle tracks in one single file. It is sometimes desired to extract the audio, video and subtitle portions of a MKV file.
Below are the steps to extract video, audio, or subtitles from a MKV file using MKVToolnix and MKVExtractGUI, both open source and free tools.
MKVToolnix is a set of cross platform (Linux, Mac OSX, Windows ) tools that allow you to create, edit, demux, or merge Matroska files. This package is also used by Blurip for ripping Bluray discs into MKV. Since all the tools of MKVToolnix are command line utilities, some of them have GUI counter parts for easy usage. Such a GUI is the MKVExtractGUI, which is the front end for demuxing or extracting MKV files.
1. Download the zip archives of MKVToolnix, and MKVExtractGUI (download links given below). Extract the zip files, and move MKVExtractGUI.exe file to the MKVToolnix folder.
2. Double click on MKVExtractGUI to run the tool.
3. Select the Input MKV file. MKVExtractGUI then runs the MKVExtract utility from the MKVToolnix package, and lists all the tracks in that file. Select the tracks that you want to extract, choose a output directory, and click on ‘Extract’.

4. Once the extraction is done, you will see ‘Extracted’ displayed in the status bar of MKVExtractGUI window.
That’s it. You now have all the tracks (video, audio, subtitle text) of the MKV file as separate files. You can go ahead with video conversion, or audio conversion to convert these files to any other formats.
