Browsing files and folders is a very often done task in Windows. Using the default program Windows Explorer for this often done job is very tiring and boring. Not only is it a basic tool, but also not so user-friendly, requiring many clicks and views before getting to the desired file or directory.

CubicExplorer, a free and open source utility is a very good replacement for Windows Explorer. It gives you all the functionality of Windows Explorer plus many advanced features in a very easy to use and navigate environment. It’s simplicity of use is due to it’s browser like interface.

CubicExplorer brings the idea of tabbed browsing from browsers to desktop. You can create multiple tabs, each showing the contents of a folder. This way you can open multiple folders in the same window and toggle between them easily. It’s user interface can be changed with a variety of skins with Vista, Mac and many other themes.

CubicExplorer is easy to start using with, due to it’s browser like interface with customizable toolbars and tabs. You can show/hide the Menu, Navigation, View, Bookmarks toolbars and add or remove buttons to these toolbars just like you do it in Firefox. Right-Click on any toolbar and choose ‘Customizer’. Drag and drop any icons that you want to be added to the toolbars. Also if you want to remove any buttons from a toolbar, drag and drop them off onto the ‘Customize’ window. This is very similar to the way Firefox Navigation Toolbar can be customized.

A very handy feature is the ‘Breadcumbs Navigation’ which gives you a single click access to any folder in the hierarchy. In order to enable this, click on the ‘…->’ button present at the left end of the address bar. All the folders in the hierarchy are now shown as buttons so you can navigate the directory structure with ease.

CubicExplorer gives a left hand panel with tabs for Quickview, Filters and Bookmarks. The Quickview pane lets you see the selected images without any need for opening them in a image viewer, similar to the image preview feature of Windows 7 Explorer. Even though Windows 7 has a better Explorer than it’s predecessors, it does not yet give the ease of use and advanced features of CubicExplorer.

A good thing about this tool is that you can save a session, that is all the opened tabs, views, panes, toolbars and toolbar icons will be remembered when you open CubicExplorer the next time. You can save multiple sessions and assign one as a default one. Also CubicExplorer does not edit Windows registry. It stores all it’s settings in files. You can also set CubicExplorer as the default file and folder application by the following steps:

  1. Go to Control Panel –> Folder Options –> ‘File Types’ Tab
  2. Select the ‘Folder’ file type and click on ‘Advanced’ button
  3. Click ‘New’ button and give a name (say CubicExplorer)
  4. For the label “Application used to perform action” browse and give the path for “CubicExplorer.exe”
  5. Upon returning to the ‘Edit File Type’ dialog box, select CubicExplorer, click ‘Set Default’ and save.

Works with Windows 7/XP/Vista.
