A key to having a faster PC is to periodically clean up the registry using a registry cleaner such as CCleaner. While removing unwanted registry entries left over by incomplete installation of programs helps a lot, you can further improve performance by defragmenting Windows registry. Similar to hard disk defragmentation, registry defragmentation also compacts and optimizes the registry and increases PC speed.

Here is how you can fix Windows registry by defragmenting using Simnet Registry Defrag:

1. Download and install Simnet Registry Defrag 2010 (download link at bottom).

2. Run Simnet Registry Defrag 2010, go to the Status tab and click on ‘Analyze’. The freeware program will start analyzing your system registry for any gaps or fragments that can be fixed.

3. Once the analysis is complete, you can view the results which show the registry fragmentation as a percentage and also a visual image of the extent of fragmentation in each of the registry’s main components.

By default Simnet Registry Defrag adds a system restore point each time you defrag your registry. If you want to avoid this, you can do so from the ‘Settings’ tab.
