There are several iTunes alternative freeware that let you copy music from Computer to iPod, including CopyTrans Manager and YamiPod. However sometimes you want to transfer music the other way, from your iPod to your hard drive, after a Computer crash or accidentally deleted music library. If you had not already taken a back-up of iTunes library and Playlists, then you need to somehow recover the deleted songs.

In such cases, iPod Rescue, a free and portable application really comes to rescue. Simply connect your iPod to your Computer, run iPod Rescue and choose your device by clicking on the iPod menu. Once the device is recognized, iPod Rescue scans it and shows all the songs that can be recovered from it.

You can even preview songs by playing them using iPod Rescue’s built-in audio player. Select the songs you want to transfer in the ‘Songs on my iPod’ tab. Then go to the ‘Songs to rescue’ tab and click on the ‘Rescue’ button in the top right.

You will be asked to choose the destination folder, and are also given an option to change the naming format. By default, iPod Rescue names the recovered songs in the ‘Artist-Title.mp3′ format. You can also choose the ‘Title-Artist.mps3′ or let it retrieve the original iPod internal filename before copying the music to your PC.
