Easily Manage File Extensions in Windows with FileTypesMan

Whenever you double click a file, Windows opens it in a program which has been registered for that file extension. Sometimes installing new software messes up these file associations and results in opening of unexpected or unwanted programs.

You can manage the file extensions from the ‘File Types’ tab (Tools –> Folder Options) of Windows Explorer. However, browsing and editing file extensions is not so easy in the Windows built-in ‘File Types’, given it’s clumsy and non-intuitive interface. FileTypesMan is a very user-friendly utility which lets you find, view and edit file associations with minimal effort. FileTypesMan lets you search for file extensions by keywords.

Windows Folder Options
It displays all information pertaining to a File Type in a tabular form with several columns such as Extension, Type Name, MIME Type, it’s default icon, Product information (name, version, company name), etc. You can choose the columns to be included, customize their order and width.

With this free Windows tool, you can create a new extension,
change the file type for an extention by choosing from the list of
available ones, and also edit a file type. FileTypesMan lets you change the default icon, MIME type, User Choice (Windows 7/Vista)
of a file type. You can configure a file type’s advanced options to
exclude it from Windows File Types list, to open files of that type
immediately after a download, exclude items of that type from the ‘Recent Documents’, add the file type to the ‘New’ menu of Explorer etc.

FileTypesMan File Extension Change

In the Windows built in File Types manager, the actions associated with a file type are only available when you open it’s advanced options. FileTypesMan overcomes this drawback by displaying all actions related to a file extension in the bottom pane, thus giving users a single comprehensive view. Actions can be added and modified from the right click context menu. Other interesting features include opening of file type or action in RegEdit, saving of selected items as TXT/HTML/XML/CSV file, HTML report generator, automatic desktop refresh for changes to take effect immediately, option to exclude icons for faster loading of file extensions table etc.

FileTypesMan is a standalone application, requiring no installation. Take this portable app with you on your Flash drive to use it anywhere you go.
